Winter 2012 Team in Training Kick Off

In That's Goofy! on September 7, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Psstttt, I will tell you a little secret. I signed up for the Disney Goofy Challenge in July but September 6 was the official start date! I am so excited about this opportunity to embark on another season of fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Team in Training Donation Balloon message

Each season, Team in Training start off the season with a kick off meeting at a local park. What a day they picked, first day of school, Dr appointment, big work meeting, kick off and a boot camp class all to squeeze in.  Fortunately the kick off was about a football field away from the building I have my boot camp in.  My plan, run over to the meeting early, and then run the kiddos back to the gym and squeeze into boot camp a few minutes late. I managed to do all of that :).

I missed the best part of the kick off but I had the chance to spend a few moments with my mentor Gabi.  I really hit the jackpot on mentors so I am thrilled to have her.  She had a little present for her mentees.  She brought to the meeting purple and green balloons with a laminated card with our donation site on them. She launched them at the event in hopes that someone will find them and make donations.  Pretty cute idea! Hopefully mine

will not end up caught in a tree or a ditch.  But crazier things have happened!

Wish me luck!

TRAINING

In August I ran  for over 14 hours covering 70+ miles and burning over 8,000 calories.  I missed logging a few speed work runs and drills. I participated in 6 hours of boot camp classes. My mileage was a little lower than I wanted but I tend to schedule 1-2 week breaks every 6-8 weeks to let my body recover some. Since I have some of my biggest runs in September, I opted to ease back some at the end of August.  September is shaping off to an excellent start! Below are a few photos from my runs in August.

UPCOMING EVENTS/RUNS

I am working hard and taking every mile of my training very seriously.  In addition, I am using my mission this year to use my legs for a good cause.  Three of the events listed below are for charitable organizations to make the life and health of other individuals better.  While I am not fundraising for those events, the proceeds of my registration fee benefit their causes.

Dunkin Fun Run  5k- September 9, 2012 (then running about 15-17 miles post race).

TCBY Fundraiser – 20% of proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training campaigns for myself and Wendy C.

Running for a Reason – Run for Charity

In That's Goofy! on August 9, 2012 at 8:15 am

I was happy but not at all suprised to see the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training on Active.com’s top list of Run for a Cause article this week. Since its inception, they have raised over 1.2 billion dollars for cancer research. Do you run for a reason? If not consider it today. Someone will be glad you did.

Yesterday was the first ever Wear your TNT gear day.  I am happy to report that I wore my gear even when I had a rare chance to go out in non tech wear. Not pictured, but I managed to add some fluffy lavendar flip flops and purple toenails to top it off 🙂

Team in Training National Wear your Gear Day

This year I am proud to run 39.3 miles for Team in Training through the Disney Goofy Challenge in January 2013.  You can make a donation at My Fundraising Page.  A donation of any amount is very much appreciated.  Or with  a special donation of $39 you can dedicate a mile for one of your Hero’s by participating in My Hero Fundraiser.

You can read more about Team in Training and how you can run to wipe out blood cancers by going to their national site http://www.teamintraining.org

It IS a small world after all! A Goofy update.

In That's Goofy! on August 7, 2012 at 12:14 pm

Here is my latest updates on training and fundraising for Team in Training for the Disney Goofy Challenge.  You can read about why I am running the Disney Goofy Challenge and my current fundraiser at the links My Hero Fundraiser or Disney Goofy Challenge 39.3 Miles I am Doing It!

It’s a Small World After All

At the age of 3 my mom took me on my first trip to Disney World. I remember two things from that trip 1) It’s a Small World Ride and 2) waking up in my pjs to watch the fireworks over Magic Kingdom from the Contemporary Hotel.  I loved It’s a Small World, riding around in the boat and looking at all the different dolls dressed in beautiful outfits. I wanted to go to all those places.  But in 1976 the world, although smaller, was not as easy to maneuver.  The days of texting, Skype, cell phones and Facebook were well into the future, not even dreamed about on the Carousel of Progress. Epcot’s Spaceship earth did not even exist. In 1976 if you wanted to contact a friend halfway around the world an expensive phone call or a letter (snail mail as it is referred to now) was about the only way you could do it.

But 30+ years later, I realized that Walt had it right. Two of my biggest donations to date came from half way around the world from Singapore this past week.  One from a long-time dear friend and the other a person I have never met. From one Facebook post I gained two new heroes, made a few new Facebook friends, met a few new Goofy TNT participant (not far from my own turf) and bought a TNT tutu (details on that later :). Yes Walt, it is a small world after all!

Training

Training recap. I left off on Monday.

Tuesday – Track work out. 1 mile warm up and then 6x60s (that is sixty seconds fast, sixty seconds jog). Total miles 2.64 (1.6 miles at 9:22 pace). Track work outs are not my favorite but I am always thankful for the fantastic scenery. That day it was a great sunset.

Sunset at my track workout

Wednesday – One hour boot camp class

Thursday – 15 minutes aqua jogging.  It was just too hot to run outside. I took advantage of a great indoor lazy river at our gym, tossed the boys in the river and chased them around. How can they float fast than I can run??? 🙂

Friday – Off

Saturday – 15 mile run. Well I ran an awesome 10 miles, a fall apart 4 miles and walked the last mile.  I don’t know if it was heat, illness or what, but I know when to tell my body to take it easy and that was the day.  In 24 hour period, every member of our family had competed in a major event. The boys triathlon, me a 15-miler and Jeff a sprint triathlon. I had logged only about 7 hours of total sleep over Thursday and Friday night.  I still needed some energy to get through the day, so the last mile….. I walked.

Sunday – 20 minute swim (1/2 mile).

Monday – 1 hour boot camp class and a 32 minute (3 mile run).

Walking my dog – I logged about 4 miles last week walking my dog.

I needed one more run in there, but needless to say there were not enough hours in last week. I still logged about 7 hours of exercise time.

Fundraising

$700 – on-line donations

$250 – pending corporate matches

Total of $950 to date! I am about a quarter of the way there!

Every penny counts! Goofy Training Update

In That's Goofy! on July 31, 2012 at 11:58 am

This week’s update is a great one.

Training

My update for last week was mid-week (went through Wednesday) so there is not a ton to report on training.  I took Thursday off since I did a double workout on Wednesday and then Friday it rained and one kiddo had Fifth’s Disease to my plans to run were out the window.

Saturday – 11.12 mile run.

Sunday – off

Morning sunrise.

Monday – 1 hour boot camp followed by a 20 minute/2-mile run.  I was up at 4:30 am to get it all in and back home by 7 am. Another hero donation the night before and the welcome of a beautiful morning sun was fantastic motivation.

Fundraising

Hero Fundraiser – Fundraising is off to a GREAT start!!! I have 3 heros to run for!  You can read more about that HERE>>> Hero Fundraiser.  Basically, for a $39 donation, I dedicate a mile to your hero.  I have some fun surpises for you and your hero so go read about it. I am just thrilled that I can run for a cause.  One friend posted a photo this weekend on facebook and it sums it all up.

Make a change – Since I was young, I have kept a spare change jar. My grandmother kept a spare change jar. She would add up the money and buy savings bonds for all her grandchildren. When we graduated college, it was her gift to us. Watching her save and count her pennies and have it turn into a wonderful gift really made an impression.   Over the years, my spare change jar was the revenue stream for toys, as I grew older, weekend trips and lately charitable organizations. The change bucket was looking pretty big so I add it all up and it came out to $250. Since my company matches up to $250 dollars, I thought this was a great way to pay this gift forward and double the effort.

Totals to Date

$467 on-line donations

$250 pending corporate match

Total: $717 to date or 18% of goal!

If you would like to make a donation, you can go directly to My Fundraising Page or if you would like to honor a hero, check out My Hero Fundraiser.
